Different types of IELTS tests
The IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests are designed for different purposes. Each test follows the same format in Listening and Speaking, but the Reading and Writing sections vary based on the version.
Exam Format
The IELTS test assesses Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are conducted on the same day without a break, lasting a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Speaking test is a short face-to-face interview of 11-14 minutes and may be scheduled on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other sections, depending on availability and convenience.
Duration
30 minutes
Listening
This section lasts for approx. 30 minutes, during which candidates listen to four recorded audio sections and answer a total of 40 questions. In the paper-based test, an additional 10 minutes is provided at the end to transfer answers to the answer sheet. However, in the computer-delivered version, only 2 minutes is given to review and submit answers. The audio recordings are played only once and include a mix of conversations and monologues in various accents.
Duration
60 minutes
Reading
This section is allocated 60 minutes. Candidates are expected to answer 40 questions based on three reading passages. The texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers for the Academic test, and from everyday materials such as advertisements, notices, and instruction manuals for the General Training test. Time management is crucial, as each passage becomes progressively more challenging.
Duration
60 minutes
Writing
This section lasts for 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. In the Academic module, Task 1 requires candidates to describe visual information such as a chart, graph, or diagram, while Task 2 is an essay responding to a viewpoint or problem. In the General Training module, Task 1 involves writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal), and Task 2 remains the same essay format. Candidates should aim to spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.
Duration
60 minutes
Speaking
The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview that lasts between 11 -14 minutes. It is divided into three parts: Part 1 includes general questions about the candidate’s background, hobbies, and interests; Part 2 involves speaking for 1–2 minutes on a given topic after one minute of preparation; and Part 3 includes a more detailed discussion related to the topic in Part 2.
